Practical Prepping Podcast Episode # 53,
"Dealing With Heat Related Illunesses"

Heat related illness
We discuss the people at greatest risk, and how our bodies regulate temperature by sweating, and we discuss how dehydration increases the risk.

Our Environment plays a large part in how well our bodies cool themselves as well. Air temp, humidity, wind speed, clothing and sun exposure, figure into heat related illnesses. Even high body fat is a factor.

Certain medications may increase risk of heat related illnesses. These include psychotropic drugs, some medication for Parkinson's disease, tranquilizers, diuretics, and birth control medications.

Heat illnesses range from mild heat cramps to life threatening heat stroke. We cover them all.

Heat stroke (THIS IS LIFE ENDANGERING)
The body loses the ability to cool itself.
This is an acute medical emergency !
Call 911 immediately!
Do Not give the parient anything to drink.
Remove as much clothing as possible.
Immerse in cool bath, or Ice pack armpits, groin, and neck areas to lower core temperature.
Transport to medical facility is necessary.

Prevention of all heat related illnesses:
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!
Did we say hydrate?
Before, during, & after activities
Wear appropriate clothing
Pace yourself
Utilize morning and evening cooler temps
Limit direct sun exposure
Take frequent breaks for rest & hydration

Finally, Never Leave Children in Cars:

  • Never leave infants, children or pets in a parked car, even if the windows are cracked open.
  • When leaving your car, check to be sure everyone is out of the car. Do not overlook any children who have fallen asleep in the car.
